The origin of Poker is still discussed, as nobody can say for sure from what games it originates.
One of the Chinese or Persian games can be the an ancestor of the game. According to some books and dictionaries the game came from France. China was the first country in which card games appeared, in Persia there was a game with 25 cards and 5 suits and in France gamblers began to use decks consisting of suits made from spades, diamonds, clubs, and hearts. So, the origin of the game is still discussed. In the USA the game appeared in New Orleans and it was spread all over the country. At the beginning of the 19th century the game was extremely popular, but it differed from the modern version of the game. During the civil war other Poker variations appeared and they were very popular. Such Poker variations as Stud, Draw, Straight Poker appeared and they were played by millions of gamblers. During the Wild West period of United States history, a place where one could play Poker could be found in just about every town. Poker is the only casino game, in which players play against each other, but not against the house.
