Poker originates from several games, but hardly anybody knows these games.
Poker can be based on one of the Chinese or Persian card games. According to some books France is the birthplace of Poker. The true origin of the game remains shrouded in mystery. In the USA the game of Poker originated from New Orleans and spread along the riverboats that traveled the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. Later, during the Civil War there appeared new variations of this game and they became very popular. During the Civil War stud poker, the draw, and the straight Poker appeared and became very popular. Poker could be played in nearly every town during the Wild West period in the USA. Only when playing Poker you play against other players and not against the house. Poker has many variations, although the rules of play and strategy differ, the hierarchy of winning hands remains the same.
