The game of Poker is based on several games, but still nobody can say for sure what these games are.
Poker can be based on one of the Chinese or Persian card games. According to some books and dictionaries the game came from France. China was the first country in which card games appeared, in Persia there was a game with 25 cards and 5 suits and in France gamblers began to use decks consisting of suits made from spades, diamonds, clubs, and hearts. The true origin of the game remains shrouded in mystery. In the USA the game of Poker originated from New Orleans and spread along the riverboats that traveled the Mississippi and Ohio rivers. In 1835 Poker was one of the most popular games and then it was different from the modern version of the game. During the civil war other Poker variations appeared and they were very popular. During the Civil War stud poker, the draw, and the straight Poker appeared and became very popular. During the Wild West period of United States history, a place where one could play Poker could be found in just about every town. Poker is a unique game as each player plays against other players, but not against the house. Poker has many variations, although the rules of play and strategy differ, the hierarchy of winning hands remains the same.
