So how does the betting work? In most casinos players have to ante to get cards. After all the cards are dealt you basically have three choices. If you make a bet, which is at least equal to the previous bet you call. You can raise, but before you have to meet the highest bet of the table. After you call the other amount it is basically up to you how much you want to bet. Let's take the example from above: somebody on the table raises a dollar, you have to call him with a dollar and then you can raise whatever you want. In some casinos there is a raising limit, which can’t be exceeded. You can fold. In this case you lose your bet and any chance of winning the pot.
