Avoiding
Tilt at the Poker Tables
Tilting
in poker is never a good thing. If you've heard the term
before, but don't know what it means, it's important to understand
that, before you play. So, let's talk about what tilt is and
how you can avoid the tilt trap.
Going
on Tilt is when losing at poker makes a player so upset that they
make bad plays in a desperate attempt to win their money back,
often loosening up and playing any semi-decent hand. This
happens very often after a premium hand loses to an underdog,
especially on the river. Players on tilt, however, tend to
lose a lot more than usual, due to poor judgment.
Some
players will intentionally incite tilt in opponents with taunting
also. So, it doesn't necessarily take a bad beat to make a
person tilt. In fact, tilt could be caused by tiredness,
taunting, general stress or a number of other factors.
Any
player who wishes to be a winner in the long run will need to learn
to avoid tilt. One of the best ways to avoid playing poorly
when overly frustrated after taking a bad beat is to take a break
from playing. Sometimes, you just need to step back and relax,
after all.
If
you're playing a live poker
game, get up, go for a walk, get some air, do anything but
continue to play if you know that you can't play your best.
You might have to post and fold, and may come back to a smaller
chip stack than when you left the table, but you are likely to lose
far more playing poorly.
Any
good poker player will need to realize when they're about to go on
tilt. Emotions can get in the way of logical poker
play, so it's important to take your time when you are feeling
very lucky, very upset, or any other strong emotion.
After
a player takes a bad beat in a tournament, they'll often go all in
the following hand with any decent cards, such as A7. So,
remember to think before going all in, especially after a bad beat,
and remember your poker fundamentals. It's far better to be
patient and get yourself back in the game with some solid poker
play. Tilting will get you nowhere.
Remember
to consider tilt before each play, especially when you're feeling
very emotional. Don't underestimate its power, and choose to
do something else if you can't play well. Relax, and remember
the poker players who win the most are often those in control of
their emotions. So, no matter how hard that can be to do,
it's an important skill for you to master.
